REVEMENDATION: Seaforth Country Lodge
We believe in the integrity of the lived experience with our Revemendation Series, if we haven’t walked into the rooms or breathed the air, we don’t recommend it. Over the past 3 months, we’ve leaned into a more intentional flow state, curating selections that acknowledge the complexities of our current world while providing the profound stillness we all crave. This new Revemendation began with an unexpected invitation to The Seaforth Country Lodge.
A Legacy of Resilience and Beauty
Originally a farm named Esperanza, the land was purchased in 1892 by Pat and Helen McKenzie, who renamed it Seaforth. Through decades of determination, they transformed it into a thriving dairy farm passed down through generations. Today, the original homestead is a gateway for nature lovers, nestled within a 360-hectare conservancy bordering the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our Director, Venetia, recently spent a week in one of their most luxurious suites, experiencing the magic of this “double recognition” site, celebrated both for its ancient San Rock Art and its breathtaking biological diversity.
The Seaforth Experience
At the lodge, the team works with a quiet, heartfelt diligence to ensure your time in the mountains is nothing short of magical.

The Drakensberg mountains are the soul of this region. Whether you are a history buff or an adrenaline seeker, there is a rhythm here for everyone.
- Biodiversity & Wildlife: Home to over 300 bird species (200 of which are found right on the lodge grounds), you’ll spot everything from Eagles to Cape Vultures. Keep an eye out for Rhebuck, Duiker, and the majestic Eland. At night, the jackals sing “plaintiff lullabies” under the stars.
- The San Rock Art: Explore one of the world’s largest repositories of ancient art, with 30,000 paintings scattered across the landscape.
- River Adventures: Follow footpaths to hidden picnic spots and swimming pools, or trek 1.5km upstream to a hidden waterfall known as “The fountain of Youth.”
- The Legendary Sani Pass: Not for the faint of heart. Ascend from 1,544m to the 2,876m summit. Grab your passport and enjoy a drink at the “Highest Pub in Africa.” The lodge can arrange a 4×4 tour or you can pilot your own vehicle into the clouds.

- Himeville Museum & Fort: A beautifully curated journey through time. From the old prison and telephone exchange to the history of the Khoi/San people, this museum offers an intimate look at the settlers and natural history of the area.
- Sport & Leisure: Whether it’s fly-fishing in local spots, golfing at the Underberg Country Club, or exploring the trails on horseback, the outdoors are your playground.
